Monkton Combe School

Here at Monkton we aim to provide a full and varied, academic and all-round education based on Christian foundations for boys and girls aged 2 to18 and to make it an experience that sets standards for life.

We aim to:

  • help all pupils discover their abilities and then to develop and use them to the full
  • provide an ordered, purposeful, happy and caring community in which pupils are encouraged to develop
  • moral discernment, adopt high standards of behaviour and achieve a balance between thoughtfulness towards others and freedom for themselves
  • instil in young people both a sense of service and the adaptability to respond to rapid change and new challenges.

The Senior School, founded in 1868 by Reverend Francis Pocock, Vicar of Monkton Combe, is in an ideal setting facing south on the slopes overlooking the Midford and Avon Valleys.  The historic city of Bath is less than three miles away.

A high proportion of the 357 pupils at the Senior School board, coming from all parts of the United Kingdom and from abroad. About 35% are day pupils.  Although the school has a strong boarding ethos it is so organised that the day pupils are able to participate fully in its life.  To this end, there is a good mix of boarding and day pupils in each House.

In 1992, the School became fully co-educational, merging with Clarendon School for Girls which introduced the opportunity for an entry at 11 years.

Monkton Prep, situated less than a mile away at the top of the hill, was founded twenty years later in 1888.  The first Headmaster was Charles Howard whose wife was the daughter of Rev R Bryan, the Principal of the Senior School.  In 1888 there were just 4 boys in the school - today the school has over 200 pupils both boys and girls.

Monkton Pre-Prep, founded in 1929, is situated on the edge of the Prep School site and caters for over 100 children, boys and girls, between the ages of 2 and 7 years.

The warm, family atmosphere of the Pre-Prep helps children make the giant leap from home to school with confidence and a genuine feeling of security.  Close relationships between parents, staff and children are fostered as each child is nurtured as a unique individual, growing as part of a Christian community.
