Pizza Express Weston-Super-Mare Review 29th January 2018

Pizza Express Weston-Super-Mare

Newly opened in Dolphin Square, Weston-super-Mare, this branch of Pizza Express has a nautical theme to suit its location, sailing rope criss-crosses the ceiling, pictures are suspended on the walls like portholes and seating booths for four or six are set out around the room like beach huts on the sea front. We chose one called Brean Beach if only because many moons ago we had a happy picnic there and wanted to go down memory lane.

This is all very jolly and even in the winter months has great appeal; we ignored the rain-lashed boulevard outside set about ordering up all things Italian that remind us of sunshine and good times, in the shape of pizzas and frothing glasses of ice-cold Peroni. To start we decided to share a Classic Italian Antipasto, a mixture of Italian salamis and Calabrese sausage, olives, artichoke, roasted tomatoes, sweet Peppadew peppers, buffalo mozzarella, and dough baked with Gran Milano cheese, accompanied by garlic butter and pestorissa, a harissa spiced tomato dip. And after that, I ordered a Fiorentina pizza (always my favourite), with spinach, mozzarella, tomatoes and garlic, topped by a free range egg, and for my friend, a classic Margherita with mozzarella and tomato, turned into a bigger, thinner, crispier Romana.

By now just reading through all these ingredients we were feeling much warmer and as though summer really couldn’t be far off. Our starter to share arrived looking amazing, a large white plate balanced on a tall tripod stand, the selection of meats artfully arranged, surrounded by the accompanying salad and crispy bread. I loved the artichoke and the Peppadew peppers which have such a satisfying kick to them, and the pestorissa was a great addition spread on the baked bread. My friend’s high point was the Calabrese sausage which apparently was beyond spicy and all in all this was the perfect starter to share with a little something to tempt all tastes.

The Peronis had been so good with the first course, we decided two more would be even better with the pizzas to follow, so ordered them and set about discussing our holiday plans. We’d almost made the decision to drive down the Amalfi coast when our main courses arrived, magnificently sizzling fresh from the oven. Pizza Express is faultless when it comes to continuity in quality across their branches and I enjoyed my Fiorentina as I always do, plus the Margharita was equally good.

We had lots of fun, the bill was reasonable and service was excellent, I think a visit when it’s really summer would be a good idea!
