The Ship and Castle at Congresbury
The Ship and Castle at Congresbury
We called into this newly refurbished pub on our way home from Cheddar one evening, the last time we visited this hostelry it was certainly different.
The pub is now more of a “Bistro” eatery with wooden tables, grey painted walls and quirky wicker high back chairs (these may look good but they are extremely uncomfortable)
It looked as if the restaurant was pretty well fully booked so we were lucky to find a table. After ordering a glass of dry white wine which although it was a large glass I thought was pretty expensive at £5.80 and an orange juice and lemonade which cost £2.70, we chose from the menu which was pretty extensive, my husband opted for the gammon steak egg and thick cut chips, the chips were extremely disappointing, they were thick cut chips coated in something and whilst they looked good they were soft and disappointing, the gammon although thick and succulent had an awful lot of fat which needed to be either crisped up or trimmed and this meal was served with nothing but the thick cut chips at £12.00 some sort of salad or veg would have been nice, I chose the sirloin steak which was served with home made battered onion rings, a part of a mushroom and the “thick cut chips”, this steak was excellent, overall I think the pub is trying to be more than a Gastro Pub and although nearly there its not quite there yet, the prices for a pub or bistro pub in this area are extremely high and whilst they are busy at the moment I wonder if you would return ? Our bill came to £37.10p (service not included)
